Laser headlights will be available as optional equipment SA5AZ112 starting in 11/2014.
The laser headlight is a combined LED laser headlight. Low- and high-beam headlights are generated by LEDs, as with an LED headlight. The laser will be activated with the auxiliary high beam (high beam booster) and non-glare high beam.
Multiple high-performance light emitting diodes emit highly bundled laser beams (blue light) via special optics on to a deflection mirror. The deflection mirror directs the laser light to a phosphorous membrane. Only there, by use of yellow phosphorous, a strongly illuminating white light is generated (as with LEDs) from the blue laser light.
The light generated by the laser headlight is therefore a very light white light.
Laser beams are not emitted by the laser headlight.
With a range of almost 600 m (US vehicles with laser additional headlight have a shorter range), the laser additional headlight illuminates almost twice as far as the high beam of an LED headlight.
When the high-beam assistant function is activated, the additional laser high beam and the high beam of the LED high beam headlights are also switched on additionally, from a driving speed of approx. 60 km/h onwards. When the driving speeds falls below 55 km/h again, the laser auxiliary high beam and the high beam of the LED high beam headlights will switch off with a delay again. Therefore, when using the vehicle stationarily on a roller test stand, do not look into the light beam.
Observe the SAFETY INFORMATION .
It is not possible for the driver to manually switch the additional laser high beam on and off, as is the case with conventional high beams. This is true both when driving and when the vehicle is at a standstill.
In the workshop, the additional laser high beam can only be switched on using a test module for roughly 1 sec with greatly reduced light intensity through the following path:
- Body
- Lighting
- Headlight LED
- LED headlight
The laser headlight adjustment is coupled with the low-beam headlight and occurs exclusively with the adjustment of the low-beam headlight.
If the laser unit is defective, the complete laser headlight is replaced. A dismantling of the laser unit is not permitted.
