COMFORT ACCESS AND PASSIVE GO DO NOT WORK AFTER REPLACING A REMOTE KEY

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): SI B66 16 18, Date of Issue:  November 01, 2018
BMW: G01 (X3 model year 2018); G12 (7 Series Sedan); G30 (5 Series Sedan); G32 (640i xDrive Gran Turismo); Affected general production range (excluding the X3) is July 1, 2015 through April 30, 2018
GROUP: Drivers Assistance, Remote Control Systems

SITUATION

NOTE: This situation only affects the listed vehicles with a factory I-level lower than 18-03-XXX.

After teaching in a new replacement radio remote key (aka radio-operated key), Comfort Access keyless entry and Passive Go (aka Convenience Starting) are no longer possible. However, it is possible to start the engine by holding the new key to the ring antenna at the right side of the steering column.

CAUSE

Software error in the remote key, and/or the Display Key where applicable.

PROCEDURE

  1. Request the customer to make all original remote keys available. On G12 and G30 with Remote Control Parking (option code 5DV), the Display Key will also be needed.
  2. Confirm that the remaining remote and Display keys function without problems at the vehicle.

If all remaining radio remote and Display keys are fully functional for both comfort access and convenience starting, install a complete set of new radio remote keys and a new BDC control unit (Body Domain Controller).

  3. After installing the BDC, program the vehicle to the latest I-level using ISTA 14.4.1x or higher. The remaining original remote keys and or display keys must also be reordered.
  4. Verify all keys at the vehicle for proper operation.
NOTE: Programming the vehicle to the latest I-level without replacing the keys nor the BDC will not result in a correction to this complaint.

PARTS INFORMATION

Obtain the part numbers for the BDC and the keys by entering the chassis number into the Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC).
