SERVICE INFORMATION
Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure the next time the vehicle is in the shop.
What's New:
- This Service Action repair qualifies for Alternative Mobility Solution (AMS) expense reimbursement.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves 5 and 7 Series produced June 7th and 8th 2017. Approximately 28 vehicles are affected by this Service Action. Refer to the attached VIN list.
Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as "Open" when checked either in AIR, the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.
SITUATION
There may be a rattling noise coming from the engine area at the transmission oil cooler thermostat or (on xDrive models only) the transmission oil cooler lines coming into contact with the left front output shaft.
CAUSE
The bracket that holds the transmission oil cooler thermostat to the left front frame rail may be defective
CORRECTION
- Replace the holder for the transmission oil cooler thermostat
- On xDrive models: Check and if necessary, replace the transmission oil cooler lines and inner CV boot for the output shaft.
PROCEDURE
Remove the left front wheel as described in the repair instruction REP 36 10 300 "Removing and installing the front or rear wheel".
Remove the stiffening plate as described in the repair instruction REP 31 11 040 "Removing and installing/replacing the stiffening plate".
Remove the steering assembly cover as described in the repair instruction REP 51 75 010 "Removing and installing/replacing the left or right steering assembly cover".
xDrive Vehicles only
- Inspect the cooler lines for contact with the left front output shaft (1). Replace the cooler lines if the CV boot has cut into the lines. Replace the inner CV boot if it is damaged (Reference Repair Instruction 31 60 535 "Replacing two gaiters on output shaft").
- Remove the two 8mm bolts (1) that hold the thermostat bracket to the sub-frame. Replace the bolts (PN 34 30 6 771 214) during installation and tighten to 8 Nm.NOTE: The illustration shows the cooler lines removed for clarity and the bolts already loosened as a reference for the location of the bolts. Do not remove the transmission cooler lines.
- Disconnect the clamp holding the transmission oil cooler thermostat from the holder (1)
- Slide the holder out from the transmission oil cooler thermostat (1).
Install the new holder (PN 17 22 8 624 268) in reverse order.
Reinstall the steering assembly cover.
Reinstall the stiffening plate.
Reinstall the left front wheel.

Overlapping Labor Procedure - Other Repairs
If invoicing the KSD2 flat rate labor operation codes for other repair work results in overlapping labor, for those flat rate labor operations that are affected, you can now:
- Replace the stated KSD2 "FRU allowance" with a "reduced FRU value" to eliminate the overlapping labor.
For help in identifying the overlapping labor, please refer to the AIR FRU Plausibility Check (Overlapping Labor Tool) that is located in the AIR Client.
Eligible other repair work being claimed under a different defect code will require separate punch times.
On the repair order and in the claim comment section, please identify and itemize those labor operations being claimed with a "reduced FRU value."
