DIAGNOSIS OF THE DRIVESHAFT FLEXIBLE DISC
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
| BMW: | All Models |
SITUATION
When performing a routine underbody inspection, the flexible disc located either at the front, rear, or at both ends of the rear propeller shaft (aka the driveshaft) may indicate signs of cracking.
CAUSE
The outer surface of the disc consists of hardened rubber which has a slightly brittle characteristic.
Due to the ongoing exposure to driveshaft load reversals and subsequent slight flexing, cracks can develop on the disc surface.
Minor cracking on the flexible disc is normal and acceptable.
PROCEDURE
Refer to the attachment to determine if the flexible disc is acceptable or must be replaced.
- Front flex disc (transmission side) REP 26 11 051 Replacing the flexible disc for the front propeller shaft
- Rear flex disc (rear differential side) REP 26 11 052 Replacing flexible disc for rear propeller shaft.
