SITUATION

The trunk-mounted brake light remains lit for several seconds after the brake pedal is released. The length of time will vary depending on ambient temperature and voltage supply.

This can occur on either side.

CAUSE

A manufacturing error can cause the voltage supply to continue uninterrupted after releasing the brake pedal.

CORRECTION

Inspect the date of production of the affected taillight and replace if necessary.

PROCEDURE

  1. Remove the trunk-mounted brake light on the affected side following ISTA repair instructions REP 63 21 279 "Removing and installing left light of trunk lid". 
  2. Inspect the identification label for the production date of the light as shown below:

  3. The label to be inspected is shown in detail below. There are two labels, each with a date code. The label with applicable date code is shown in green. The label shown in red is not applicable and can be ignored.

  4. Is the date code shown above in green produced after September 28, 2020?

    Yes: Continue troubleshooting, this bulletin does not apply.

    No: Replace the trunk mounted taillight following ISTA repair instructions REP 63 21 279 "Removing and installing left light of trunk lid". 

PARTS INFORMATION

Obtain and confirm the part numbers for your specific vehicle by entering the chassis number in either ETK or AIR which takes into account specific equipment and/or options.

Only one  Main flat rate labor operation code can be claimed per workshop visit.

If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation above that applies instead of the Main labor code.

Refer to AIR for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowances.

Work time labor operation codes 61 00 009 and 00 58 000 are not considered Main labor operations.
