SITUATION

INFORMATION
OVERVIEW
The attachment to this bulletin provide a chronological overview of head units installed in BMW vehicles along with their option codes, model applications, service modes and other pertinent information since MY 1995. Each subsequent head unit version has become more integrated and interactive with the development of iDrive version 1 through BMW Operating System 8.
SECURITY FEATURES
Early vehicles were equipped with standalone radio units that utilized a Security Code to ensure they could not be used if stolen from a vehicle. These radio units were gradually phased out by MY 1999. For information on identification of these radios and how to obtain the Security Code please reference SI B65 05 99 .
Starting with MY 1995, BMW vehicles began to be equipped with New Generation (NG) radios that utilized I/K-Bus security to deter head unit theft. These radios were designed to only function when connected to a vehicle with an active I/K-Bus.
A new architecture in theft protection was introduced with the CCC Head Unit called Freischalt Codes (FSC Enabling Codes). These codes were stored in a central vehicle database and were downloaded to a vehicle in an automatic process through ISTA and later through data Over-The-Air (OTA). These head units were programmed to a specific VIN and could not be used in a different vehicle, even for diagnostic testing. If these head units were swapped into a different vehicle, all the FSC Enabling Codes downloaded into the module would be cancelled.
HEAD UNIT IDENTIFICATION
There are multiple methods for head unit identification available to technicians.
- Use of the attached "Head Unit Reference Tables".
- Searching ETK by the specific head unit and VIN.
- Using the ConnectedDrive Dealer Cockpit for vehicles MY 2014 and later.
The head unit and telematics module can be found in the ConnectedDrive Dealer Cockpit in the highlighted area shown below.
Currently the engineering designation of the head unit is being used in the ConnectedDrive Dealer Cockpit. This will be changed in the future. For now, please use the reference table below to identify which head unit is listed.
