SITUATION

Customer contacts a BMW center regarding the emission testing program after receiving a letter or a follow-up phone call from Automotive Testing and Development Services (ATDS), our vehicle procurement partner.

COMMONLY ASKED CUSTOMER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Why am I being contacted?

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires automotive manufacturers to conduct vehicle emissions evaluations on produced vehicles being operated in real-world conditions. For this reason, BMW of North America, LLC's (BMW NA) Environmental Engineering Department mails invitation letters to hundreds of customers in the US inviting them to have their vehicle tested.

Where is testing conducted?

Depending on the location of customer's vehicle, testing may be done at the BMW NA Emission Test Center in Oxnard, CA; SGS of North America in Aurora, CO; or MAHLE Powertrain in Plymouth, MI.

How is my vehicle tested?

Vehicles are tested indoors on a dynamometer (treadmill-like device) and driven while simulating normal driving conditions. A similar test is used to certify all BMW vehicles for emissions in North America.

Will my vehicle be safeguarded while it is being tested?

Yes. Your vehicle will be safeguarded and fully insured. Testing will be performed inside the facility in an environmentally controlled testing chamber.

How long will it take to complete the test?

The normal program length is 5 to 10 working days; occasionally, it may take longer. Less than 200 miles are typically put on the vehicle during testing.

Are there incentives for having my vehicle tested?

Yes, they include:

How do I sign up?

Participation is voluntary. If you received a letter from BMW NA, you would need to complete the provided form.

I heard about this test program from a friend, do you have any interest in testing my vehicle?

Thanks for asking! Vehicles are specifically selected based on definitive program criteria, so we're not able to accommodate requests.

RESPONSE TO THE CUSTOMER

Customers should be informed of the legitimacy of the program (see questions and answers section above).
