The safety belt buckles at the rear seat outer locations are facing the wrong way due to the belt being twisted behind the C-pillar cover.

In the photo, the buckle is pointing outwards.

CAUSE

The safety belt is designed to allow for greater comfort against the neck on shorter passengers. It thereby does not utilize guides on the safety belt between the B/C-pillar trim and the retractor.

It is possible for the belt to enter the area between the open space between the B/C-Pillar trim and the seat belt retractor in a twisted condition.

The problem can occur on either side of the front or rear seat if the safety belt is allowed to retract un-controlled.

CORRECTION

Correct the twist by slowly and gently pulling the safety belt all the way out of its retractor. At the top of belt guide, twist the belt to remove the unwanted twist behind B/C-pillar cover. Guide the belt back up to the automatic reel.

See videos below.

Instruct the customer on how to guide the safety belt to avoid twisting.

PROCEDURE

To correct the twist in the FRONT  safety belt:

  1. Pull the safety belt all the way out of its retractor.
  2. Reach up to the top of belt guide and twist the safety belt to remove the unwanted twist behind the B-pillar cover.
  3. Guide the safety belt back up to the automatic reel. The safety belt buckle should be pointing towards the interior of the vehicle.

  1. Hold the "seat" (per owner's manual) belt firmly.
  2. Press the red button on the seat belt buckle.
  3. Guide the seat belt back up to the automatic reel.
