BMW: All BMW vehicles produced since model year 2005

SITUATION

The safety belt at the front or rear locks when attempting to pull it for buckling up.

CAUSE

Quickly pulling on the safety belt can cause the safety belt reel assembly to lock.

CORRECTION

Pull gently on the safety belt, then release the tension.

Avoid pulling quickly on the safety belt when buckling up.

PROCEDURE

Pull gently on the safety belt (approx. 13 lbf, or 60 N), then release the tension.

After doing this, the safety belt should be free again. It will then be possible to pull out the safety belt without it locking.

NOTE: For information about the usage of safety belts and installation of child seats, please refer to the vehicle owner's manual (printed version for older vehicles, or the electronic version in newer vehicles' Central Information Display).
