SITUATION
Fault 180001 - "Catalytic converter: Efficiency below limit value" is stored in the DME memory.
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is not illuminated.
There are no other faults in memory relating to the fuel system.
CAUSE
DME software diagnostic sensitivity
CORRECTION
After verification of catalytic converter(s) condition, reprogram with specified version of ISTA/P or ISTA NEXT.
PROCEDURE
For conditions that are similar to the situation described:
- Perform diagnosis with the latest version of ISTA.
Are there any other faults in the fuel system stored in memory pertaining to:
- high or low fuel pressure?
- oxygen sensors?
- mixture faults?
- engine misfires?
YES - continue diagnosis with ISTA test plan.
NO - go to next step
- Perform a visual inspection of the catalytic converter(s) looking for:
External:
- Physical damage
- Excessive thermal discoloration
Internal (with endoscope via removed oxygen sensor before catalytic converter opening):
- Deposits
- Breaks or fusing in honeycomb structure
Is there any consequential damage to a catalytic converter?
YES - replace the catalytic converter.
NO - go to next step.
- Program the vehicle using ISTA/P 3.62.0 or ISTA NEXT 4.06.2x
or higher to appropriate level shown below:
Model Target integration level F22 (2 Series Coupe) F020-17-07-500 or higher F23 (2 Series Convertible) F30 (3 Series Sedan) F31 (3 Series Sport Wagon) F32 (4 Series Coupe) F33 (4 Series Convertible) F34 (3 Series Gran Turismo) F36 (4 Series Gran Coupe) G12 (7 Series) S15A-17-03-500 or higher G30 (5 Series Sedan)
Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10 ).
For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to CenterNet/TIS/Technical Documentation/Diagnostics and Programming/Programming Documentation.
PARTS INFORMATION
Refer to Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC).
WARRANTY INFORMATION
This service information bulletin provides technical, diagnostic and/or repair-related information.
Eligible and Covered Work/Repairs
The repair procedures outlined in this bulletin are covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks for defect in material or workmanship.
To submit a claim, including diagnosis, please following the established and applicable warranty policy and procedures together with the using corresponding defect code and labor operations provided in the KSD2.
Catalytic converter damaged due to outside influences is not considered a defect in materials or workmanship.
| Defect Code: | Refer to KSD2 | Defect Code that applies to the covered Replacement of the Catalytic Converter |
| Or: | ||
| 1042315900 | Vehicle Programming and Coding without a required Catalytic Converter Replacement |
And, in additional to the applicable diagnosis and repair labor operations:
| Labor Operation: | Labor Allowance: | Description: |
|---|---|---|
| 61 00 730 | Refer to KSD2 | Programming/encoding control unit(s) |
Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowances.
Work time labor diagnosis operations are not considered a Main labor operation; however, they do require an individual punch times and an explanations on the repair order and in the claim comments section.
Vehicle Programming and Coding
When ISTA/P automatically reprograms and codes all the vehicle's control modules that currently do not have the latest software, and if control module failures occur during this programming procedure:
- Please claim this consequential control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this bulletin with the applicable KSD2/AIR labor operations.
Other Repairs
Control module failures that occurred prior to this programming procedure and/or additional work is performed as a result of performing the ISTA diagnostics and related test plans:
- When covered under an applicable limited warranty, claim the control module-related and/or other repair work using the applicable defect code and labor operations in KSD2/AIR.
