TRANSMISSION SHIFTING FAULTS AT COLD TEMPERATURES
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
| BMW: | G30 (530i/530i xDrive Sedan); Produced thru June 29, 2018 |
| GROUP: | Automatic Transmission |
SITUATION
Two different complaints may observed with the automatic transmission, but only arise at low ambient temperatures between -5°F and 32°F:
- While the transmission selector lever is in position P (Park), an instrument cluster Check Control message (ID 170)
may appear:
"Call breakdown assist. Drive is defective."
An additional note appears in the Control Display:
"Drive is defective. Driving is not possible. Call breakdown assist. It is not possible to engage any drive position"
Additional symptom:
The Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) may illuminate
The following fault may be entered in the electronic transmission control unit (EGS) fault memory:
420041 - electronic pressure control valve C: Short circuit to ground or interruption
- While the transmission selector lever is in position D (Drive), an instrument cluster Check Control message (ID 173)
may appear:
"It is possible to continue driving. Transmission."
An additional note appears in the Control Display:
"Transmission. To avoid vehicle breakdown, have it checked immediately by your nearest authorized BMW Service workshop. Do not stop engine. Not possible to continue driving after switching off the engine."
The transmission is in the emergency program, with failsafe operation limited to 6th gear. It is not possible to select reverse gear.
Additional symptom:
The MIL may illuminate
The following fault may be entered in the EGS fault memory:
420041 - electronic pressure control valve C: Short circuit to ground or interruption
After a key cycle (ignition off - ignition on), the fault is no longer present. The vehicle is operational again
CAUSE
An error in an EGS self-diagnostic function at temperatures between -5°F and 32°F.
CORRECTION
Program the vehicle with ISTA 4.14.1x or higher.
PROCEDURE
Read out the Integration level (I-level) of the vehicle:
If S15A-18-07-547 or older (lower):
- Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.14.1x to the appropriate level shown below:
| Model | Target I-level |
|---|---|
| G30 (530i/530i xDrive Sedan) | S15A-18-11-523 or higher |
If S15A-18-11-523 or more recent (higher):
- Perform diagnosis with ISTA.
- Parts replacement will not provide a solution to this situation.
- ISTA Next will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply ( SI B04 23 10 ).
For information on programming and coding with ISTA, refer to CenterNet/TIS/Technical Documentation/Programming and Diagnostics/Programming Documentation
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks or the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program.

| Labor Operation: | Labor Allowance: | Description: |
| 00 00 006 | Refer to AIR/KSD2 | Performing "vehicle test" (with vehicle diagnosis system - checking faults) (Main work) |
| Or: | ||
| 00 00 556 | Refer to AIR/KSD2 | Performing "vehicle test" (with vehicle diagnosis system - checking faults) (Plus work) |
| And: | ||
| 61 21 528: | Refer to AIR/KSD2 | Connect an approved battery charger/power supply (indicated in KSD2 as "Charging battery") |
| And: | ||
| 61 00 730 | Refer to AIR/KSD2 | Programming/encoding control unit(s) |
If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead of 00 00 006.
Refer to AIR/KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowances.
During the same workshop visit, if a vehicle also requires another Technical Campaign or repair that also includes programming and encoding the control units, the programming procedure may only be invoiced one time.
Programming and Encoding - Vehicle Control Units
- The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do not have the latest software i-level. If one or more control module failures occur "during" this programming procedure:
- Please claim this "consequential" control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this bulletin with the applicable AIR/KSD2 labor operations.
Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order and in the claim comments section.
- For control module failures that occurred "prior" to performing this programming procedure:
- When "covered" under an applicable limited warranty, claim this control module-related repair work using the applicable defect code and labor operations (including diagnosis) in AIR/KSD2.
