MOBILE SERVICE SOLUTION FOR FLAT TIRES

SITUATION

BMW has approved a temporary repair solution  for flat tires. This repair solution can be applied to both standard and run flat tires. This repair solution is only available  to centers participating in the Mobile Service Program. 

This service is intended to:

Prior to providing this service, the following points should be considered:

The Radial Anchor Seal Temporary

Repair Kit has been approved for use as part of the BMW Mobile Service Program.

Specific requirements and limitations apply.

Centers that wish to utilize this tool must participate in the BMW Mobile Service

Program and have proper certification by BMW NA.

PROCEDURE

  1. Using a wheel chock, secure the vehicle from rolling away.
  2. Jack up the vehicle so that the flat tire may be rotated. If necessary, shift the transmission into neutral.
  3. Inflate the tire to the specified pressure.
  4. Rotate the tire in order to inspect for any damage to the sidewall or tread area.
  5. Tires with any of the following conditions must be replaced:
    1. Sidewall damage
    2. Cracking/dry rot
    3. Exposed belts
    4. Excessive tire wear/tire worn at or below tread wear indicator
    5. Shoulder damage
    6. Previous tire repair
    7. Damage to the wheel which the tire is fitted to
    8. Multiple punctures
    9. Single punctures greater than 4 millimeters (mm) in diameter
  6. Spray the tire with leak detector.
  7. Rotate the tire to locate the source of the leak.
  8. Mark the location with chalk.
  9. Repairs are only permitted within the crown area as shown between the dotted lines in the illustration.
  10. If necessary, remove any foreign object with pliers or another suitable tool.

  11. For punctures with a diameter of 4 mm or smaller, a temporary tire repair can be applied.
  12. Locate the reaming tool included in the kit.
  13. To determine the size of the puncture, insert the reaming tool. The reaming tool will fit snugly into a hole diameter of 4mm or less.

  14. IF THE TIRE CAN BE REPAIRED, REVIEW THE CUSTOMER INFORMATION SHEET WITH THE CUSTOMER. SPECIFIC LIMITATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS ARE DESCRIBED THEREIN. A COPY OF THE INFORMATION SHEET IS ATTACHED TO THIS BULLETIN. 
  15. If the customer DOES NOT AGREE  with the limitations/restrictions described, ARRANGE FOR A TOW SERVICE  via BMW Roadside Assistance. DO NOT PROCEED  with the steps listed below.
  16. If the customer AGREES, HAVE THE CUSTOMER SIGN THE CUSTOMER INFORMATION SHEET  and then proceed to step 17.
  17. With a twisting motion, rotate the reaming tool to clean and prepare the damaged area.
  18. After the area has been cleaned, remove the reaming tool and dip the tip into the container of Special Cement.
  19. Insert the reaming tool back into the damaged area and with a twisting motion coat the hole with cement.
  20. Remove the reaming tool and return it to the kit.

  21. Locate the plug installation tool and a plug from the kit.
  22. Extend the expansion hook toward the plug eyelet by pressing the release button at the rounded end of the plug installation tool. The handle will separate and allow the hook to move.
  23. Position the plug within the eyelet and over the expansion hook.
  24. Press the handle together to retract the hook thereby expanding the plug.

  25. Insert the plug into the damaged area.
  26. Press the plug release button with your thumb.

  27. Remove the plug installation tool and return it to the kit.
  28. Trim any excess material with the razor tool included in the kit or other suitable tool.
  29. Inflate the tire to the specified pressure and retest for any leaks.

    The design of the plug provides a secure fit on both sides of the puncture.

  30. Mark the sidewall of the tire with the letter "R" using a tire crayon. This will identify the tire as having been repaired.

  31. Record the date, mileage and tire (s) repaired on the Tire Label. 
  32. Affix the Tire Label to the windshield or other designated area.

  33. If necessary, shift the vehicle into Park and apply the parking brake.
  34. Lower the vehicle. Remove the jack and wheel chock.
  35. Reset the Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM).

Upon completion of this service, the BMW Center must contact the customer, within 72 hours, to schedule the replacement of the repaired tire(s). 

KIT/SUPPLY INFORMATION

Upon completion of the certification/training (OL5621), centers enrolled in the BMW Mobile Service Program will received the Radial Anchor Seal Temporary Repair Kit.
