SITUATION

The low washer fluid warning is illuminated even though the washer fluid reservoir is full. There are no faults stored in the system for the washer fluid level switch.

CAUSE

A non-approved washer fluid was used that is silicone-based. Silicone-based fluids are not compatible with the contactless capacitive level sensor. Fluids that contain a silicone additive are normally colored other than blue.

CORRECTION

Flush the washer fluid reservoir to remove the silicone-based fluid.

PROCEDURE

Using ISTA, check for faults stored for the windshield washer system.
Is a fault stored for the windshield washer level sensor?

NO- Go to step 2.

YES- Diagnose the system using normal troubleshooting with ISTA.
Check the windshield washer reservoir.
Is the reservoir showing residue from colored fluids?

NO- Diagnose the system using normal troubleshooting with ISTA. A fault code may be stored if an electrical fault occurs in the circuit.

YES-
- Flush the reservoir using 250 ml of silicone remover concentrate mixed with approx. 1.5 quarts of tap water.
- Leave the solution to work for 24 hours, then drain the solution.
- Fill the reservoir with BMW windshield washer fluid.

NOTE: We recommend using "BMW Group approved" windshield washer fluid when servicing the vehicle, or when performing repairs on the windshield washer system.
