SITUATION
An overfilled engine coolant system causes the release of coolant through the overflow, onto the electrically operated fuel injectors that are in the injector bore area below.
CAUSE
As the engine heats up and the engine coolant expands, an overfilled cooling system's internal pressure can become too high. If this occurs, the cooling system will release the excess pressure and engine coolant through an overflow located at the expansion tank/reservoir.
CORRECTION
If the engine coolant level is low (top-up), or it is being replaced after an applicable repair or service, only refill the engine coolant to the MAX line located inside the expansion tank/reservoir.
Do not overfill the cooling system.
This coolant check for V8 engines also pertains to the same new models' Quality Certification 1 per SI B000322 (BMW 5, 7, 8 Series) and B000422 (BMW Sports Activity Vehicles and Sports Activity Coupes).
PROCEDURE
Use an appropriate filling device that allows for a controlled filling of the expansion tank.
Examples:
Use a commercially available syringe type filling tool.
Use a commercially available squeeze type bottle, in 500 ml or 1000 ml capacity.
Spray compressed air immediately to remove any coolant residue that has spilled into the engine's fuel injector bore area.
