NO COOLING INTERMITTENTLY FROM VENTS
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
| BMW: | G12 (7 Series); G30 (5 Series); G32 (6 Series); F90 (M5) |
| GROUP: | Heating and Air Conditioning |
SITUATION
After a long journey (more than 30 minutes), the customer notices the cooling power is too low or nonexistent. Air exiting the vents is intermittently reduced although the blower setting remains the same.
The fault can occur under the following conditions:
- Air Conditioning switched ON
- At lower blower speeds
- Temperature setting is set lower than 68 degrees Fahrenheit
- Outside temperature is greater than 68 degrees Fahrenheit
- Journey time of at least 30 minutes
CAUSE
Evaporator icing up
CORRECTION
Reprogram vehicle
PROCEDURE
- Perform diagnosis with the latest version of ISTA, working through test module, if needed.
- Is the vehicle Integration Level lower then S15A-18-11-523?
Yes -proceed to Step 3
No - No programming is needed, using ISTA work through test modules to diagnose vehicle.
- Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.14.1x or higher.
| Model | Target integration level |
|---|---|
| G12, G30, G32, F90 | S15A-18-11-523 or higher |
Note that ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10 ).
For information on programming and coding with ISTA, refer to CenterNet/TIS/Technical Documentation/Diagnostics and Programming/Programming Documentation

Refer to AIR/KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowances.
During the same workshop visit, if a vehicle also requires another Technical Campaign or repair that also includes programming and encoding the control units, the programming procedure may only be invoiced one time.
Programming and Encoding - Vehicle Control Units
- The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do not have the latest software i-level. If one or more control module failures occur "during" this programming procedure:
- Please claim this "consequential" control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this bulletin with the applicable AIR/KSD2 labor operations.
Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order and in the claim comments section.
- For control module failures that occurred "prior" to performing this programming procedure:
- When "covered" under an applicable limited warranty, claim this control module-related repair work using the applicable defect code and labor operations (including diagnosis) in AIR/KSD2.
