| GROUP: | Engine Electrical System |
SITUATION
Primarily when vehicle is at altitudes higher than 5000' above sea level, and engine is at operating temperature, the idle is sporadically elevated (up to approx. 1200 rpm).
MIL indicator is illuminated.
Fault code 1E0001 - "Idle speed control: Speed too high" is stored in DME.
CAUSE
DME software error
CORRECTION
The DME software improvements come in 2 steps
- Primary improvements with I-level XXXX-17-03-50x.
- Additional minor improvements with I-level XXXX-17-07-50x (ISTA/P 3.62.0 - expected release July 6, 2017 or ISTA NEXT 4.06.1x -expected release June 23, 2017).
PROCEDURE
For conditions that are similar to the situation described:
- Perform diagnosis with the latest version of ISTA.
What is the current I-level of the programming on the vehicle?
Lower than XXXX-17-07-50x - program the vehicle with the latest version of ISTA Next or ISTA/P, then go to step 2.
XXXX-17-07-50x or higher - continue diagnosis with ISTA.
- Check if the idle is still elevated at altitude.
Has the situation been resolved?
YES- No further repair should be required.
NO - Go to step 3.
- Check the current I-level of the ISTA programming.
Has XXXX-17-07-50x been released?
YES- continue diagnosis with ISTA
NO - no further improvements can be expected until vehicle is programmed with I-level XXXX-17-07-50x
Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10 ).
For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to CenterNet/TIS/Technical Documentation/Diagnostics and Programming/Programming Documentation.
PARTS INFORMATION
Parts replacement will not improve the situation and is not recommended.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.

Vehicle Programming and Coding
When ISTA/P automatically reprograms and codes all the vehicle's control modules that currently do not have the latest software, and if control module failures occur during this programming procedure:
- Please claim this consequential control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this bulletin with the applicable KSD2/AIR labor operations.
Other Repairs
Control module failures that occurred prior to this programming procedure and/or additional work is performed as a result of performing the ISTA diagnostics and related test plans:
- When covered under an applicable limited warranty, claim the control module-related and/or other repair work using the applicable defect code and labor operations in KSD2/AIR.
