SERVICE INFORMATION

NOTE: The information above is for informational purposes only, it is not the only deciding factor.

ELIGIBLE VEHICLES

To assist you in identifying those vehicles that have this component-specific, the following Vehicle Comment will show in the VIN-specific DCSnet Warranty Vehicle Inquiry.

SI B01 05 25 (RC 17 12 90 01 00): For this vehicle, the high-temperature (HT) coolant expansion tanks breathing line/pipe limited warranty for defects in materials and/or workmanship has been extended to 10 years/120,000 miles as determined from the original first in-service/delivery date. This coverage is subject to the same vehicle eligibility requirements, limitations, and exclusion criteria that apply to the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.

NOTE: Before performing a repair and submitting a claim, first confirm that the above notice shows, confirming that it applies to the vehicle.

If you have eligibility and/or coverage questions, please contact the Warranty department through IDS by selecting Coverage, Policy, Coding Questions and Mileage Corrections prior to performing any repair.

SITUATION

Component-Specific Limited Warranty Extension

For the eligible vehicles, BMW of North America, LLC (BMW NA) is extending the limited warranty for the vehicle's high-temperature (HT) coolant expansion tank's breathing line/pipe (items #4 and #3)  to:

  • 10 years/120,000 miles, as determined by the vehicle's original first in-service/delivery date.

This component-specific limited warranty extension applies to defects in materials and/or workmanship.

G17089779

This coverage described above applies to the specific vehicle (VIN), it is transferrable to the subsequent owners, and is subject to the same vehicle eligibility requirements, limitations, and exclusion criteria that applies to the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.

G17089780
NOTE: This bulletin is notice of a limited warranty extension. This is NOT a notice of a Recall or Service Action.

There is no immediate repair required unless the BMW vehicle is currently experiencing this problem.

Customer Notification Letter

Even though this is NOT a Recall, BMW NA is sending VIN-specific customer notification letters.

CAUSE

Over time, this breathing line/pipe's (Items #4 and #3 shown above) plastic quick release connector may become brittle, and in some instances crack and break off, this could result with a coolant leak.

Should this occur, a corresponding Check Control Message (CCM) stating to "Top up coolant, the coolant level in the expansion tank is below the minimum" could display.

There may also be traces of the leaking coolant in the engine compartment and beneath the vehicle.

NOTE: To replace this hose on the G12 (740Le Sedan) and G30 (530e Sedans) vehicle models, removing and installing the water pump is required for access. Coolant pump replacement, if required, is not included under this extended coverage, please advised and work with the customer accordingly.

CORRECTION

Follow the instructions in the PROCEDURE section.

PROCEDURE

If a vehicle listed above arrives at your center with the issue described in this Service Information Bulletin, perform the corresponding diagnosis and when it determined to be applicable, replace the coolant pipe from cylinder head to the expansion tank.

Any other required coolant system-related repairs are not covered under this ELW coverage, for example the water pump. When applicable, invoiced these items on the repair order separately, and review for other coverage that may apply.

WARNING: Risk of scalding:  Carry out the repair work on the cooling system only when the engine has cooled down.
IMPORTANT: Life-time coolant filling - Never reuse used coolant!

Installation note:  Only use prescribed coolant that applies to the vehicle! Observe the mixture ratio!

For cooling system disassembly/replacement work related to plastic and/or rubber components only where a partial quantity of coolant is drained, new coolant must be used to replenish the amount that was drained, up to the top up/full level. DO NOT OVERFILL THE COOLANT SYSTEM.

Other Cooling System Issues And Repairs

This ELW specifically applies to the coolant systems expansion tank breathing line/pipe, however, these vehicles may arrive at your center with other coolant system component issues that are beyond the scope of this extended warranty coverage, for example, the water pump.

It is important to identify these other situations during the vehicle's RO write-up. Then, if the New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage period has expired, your center can proactively advise the customer that the diagnosis, and repair of these other cooling system issues do not qualify for coverage.

CLAIM INFORMATION

For eligible US-specification BMW vehicles that are registered and operated in the United States (including Puerto Rico), the component-specific 10 year (120 month)/120,000-mile extended limited warranty coverage for defects in materials and/or workmanship applies to qualifying repairs performed by authorized BMW centers.
