12 42 540 Replacing the safety battery terminal (SBK) (530i 2017-2022, 530i xDrive 2017-2022, 530e PHEV 2018-2022, 530e xDrive PHEV 2018-2022, 540i 2017-2022, 540i xDrive 2017-2022, M550i xDrive 2018-2022)
Attention!
Observe the safety regulations.
Investigate the cause for triggering the safety battery terminal!
To do this, read out the fault memory of the airbag control unit. Note the stored fault messages.
Rectify faults. Then delete the fault memory.
Use of the safety battery terminal:
- Starting from model year 1998 in the series E38, E39, E46
- From 4/99 in E36/Z3
- in each new subsequent series
There are different installation locations for the different models:
Battery in engine compartment
The safety battery terminal is replaced with the cable up to the battery remote positive terminal.
From 03/2002, the safety battery terminal is no longer applicable on all E-46 LL models with 4-cylinder engines.
Battery in the trunk at the rear of the side trim panel
Remove the side trim panel.
Follow NOTES FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING THE VEHICLE BATTERY .
Disconnect the battery ground cable and cover it.
Partially release the front side trim panel and fold it forward.
Battery in the trunk under the floor trim
Follow NOTES FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING THE VEHICLE BATTERY .
Fold the floor trim (1).
Lift the cover (2) of the battery ground cable.
Disconnect the battery ground cable (3) and cover it.
Unscrew nuts (4).
Remove the battery cover.
Battery in the trunk under the spare wheel
Remove the spare wheel.
Release screws.
Attention!
Do not kink the air pipes!
Put the air supply system (1) to one side.
Follow NOTES FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING THE VEHICLE BATTERY .
Disconnect the battery ground cable.
Release supply cable electrical system (1).
Installation note:
Remove the faulty fuses and troubleshoot.
Attention!
Note the interface!
The repair cable always has a standard length.
The high-current connector of the repair cable has a larger diameter than the battery positive wire.
For some series (for example, E46 Sports Wagon), the high-current connector of the repair cable can lead to installation problems.
This is the case if the interface is in the area of the closely fitted trim panel components.
Find a suitable interface (for example, for the E46 Sports Wagon about 10 cm behind the rear seat backrest).
Lay the repair cable parallel to the battery positive wire.
Mark the interface of the battery positive wire at the end of the repair cable.
Release the cable ties (1).
Disconnect plug connection (2).
Attention!
Do not use a bolt cutter or similar tools to cut through the cable.
A flat pinched cable terminal no longer fits into the sleeve.
Saw through the battery positive wire at the marked point with an iron saw.
Strip off the insulation of the cable terminal by the dimension (A).
Dimension A = 15 mm.
Push the high-current connector (1) over the stripped cable terminal and screw it on.
Push the heat-shrink tubing (3) over the repair cable.
Screw the threaded sleeve (1) of the repair cable (2) on to the high-current connector.
Push the heat-shrink tubing (1) over the connection point and shrink it with a hot air blower (2).
Note when laying the repaired battery positive wire:
- The heat-shrink tubing must not be chafed when moving.
- No disruptive noises may be caused by the repair cable when the vehicle is in operation.
Lay the battery positive wire (1) free of kinks and without abrasions.
