Adjust the timing of the camshaft
Preliminary work
- Refer to BLOCKING THE CRANKSHAFT IN THE TDC FIRING POSITION OF CYLINDER 1 .
- Refer to REMOVE THE HOLDER OF THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE .
- Refer to REMOVE THE HEAT SHIELD AT THE CYLINDER HEAD
- Refer to REMOVING CHAIN TENSIONER .
Prerequisite
Crankshaft is disconnected and blocked. Engine in TDC firing position at cylinder 1.
- Get the set of special tools 2 456 372 ready.TIGHTENING TORQUES SPECIFICATION
Number Description 1 Basic carrier 2 Setting gauge 0.70 for adjusting the intake camshaft 2 Setting gauge 0.70 for adjusting the intake camshaft 3 Setting gauge 0.50 for adjusting the exhaust camshaft 4 Basic carrier screws on cylinder head 5 Screw gauge on basic carrier - Use the setting gauge 0.70 (1) from the special tool kit 2456372 to adjust the intake camshaft.
- Use the setting gauge 0.50 (2) from the special tool kit 2 456 372 to adjust the exhaust camshaft.
- To release the VANOS central valve (1), use the reversible ratchet (2) from the special tool 0496855 with the special tool 2 450 487.
- Position the basic carrier (1) from the set of special tools 2 456 372 on the cylinder head.
- Position the basic carrier (1) from the set of special tools 2 456 372 on the cylinder head.
- Tighten the screws (1) from special tool set 2 456 372 on the basic carrier (2).TIGHTENING TORQUES SPECIFICATION
Basic carrier to cylinder head M6 Tightening torque 8 Nm - Position the setting gauge 0.7° (1) from the special tool kit 2 456 372 between the basic carrier (2) from the set of special tools 2 456 372 and the intake camshaft (3).
- If necessary, crank the engine at the crankshaft using special tool 0 493 380 (11 6 480).
- Tighten the screws (4) from special tool set 2 456 372TIGHTENING TORQUES SPECIFICATION
Test gauge to basic carrier M6 Tightening torque 8 Nm - Release the VANOS central valve (5) of the intake adjuster.
- Position the setting gauge 0.50 (1) from the special tool kit 2 456 372 between the basic carrier (2) from the set of special tools 2 456 372 and the exhaust camshaft (3).
- If necessary, crank the engine at the crankshaft using special tool 0 493 380 (11 6 480).
- Make sure the flattened areas (1) on the intake camshaft and the exhaust camshaft are pointing upwards at an angle.
- Tighten the screws (4) from special tool set 2 456 372TIGHTENING TORQUES SPECIFICATION
Test gauge to basic carrier M6 Tightening torque 8 Nm - Release the VANOS central valve (5) of the exhaust camshaft adjuster.
- Make sure the flattened areas (1) on the intake camshaft and the exhaust camshaft are pointing upwards at an angle.
- Turn the intake camshaft (E) and exhaust camshaft (A) to the correct position, so that the marks (1) can be read from above.
- Make sure the cam (1) on the exhaust camshaft on cylinder 1 is pointing slightly to an the inside right at an angle.
- Make sure the cam (1) on the intake camshaft on cylinder 1 is pointing leftwards at an angle.
