Camshaft Timing Chain, Removing And Installing: Removing
-- Remove the bearing bracket. Refer to BEARING BRACKET, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Risk of damaging the engine by the timing mechanism skipping.
- Only let the engine turn in the direction of engine rotation.
-- Vibration damper version 1 Refer to Figure: turn the crankshaft on the vibration damper using the Wrench - 21mm: T40263 , Adapter: T40314 and the 24 mm socket until the vibration damper is at "TDC".
-- Vibration damper, version 2. Refer to Figure: use an offset open-end wrench - 24 mm to turn the crankshaft at the vibration damper so far, that the vibration damper is set to "OT".
- The markings -3- from the camshaft chain sprockets -2 and 4- must point upward respectively.
- The notch -arrow- on the vibration damper -1- and the arrow marking -5- on the lower timing chain cover must be align.
TIP:
Depending on the version the arrow mark -5- is not present. It is enough that the marks -3- point upward.
-- Remove the lower timing chain cover. Refer to LOWER TIMING CHAIN COVER, REPLACING .
-- Check the "TDC point" again.
-- Disengage the tension spring wire clip -3- from the oil pan upper section -arrow-.
-- Remove the guide pin -2- and the chain tensioner.
-- Remove the drive chain -1- for the oil pump from the three-layer chain sprocket and let hang at the Assembly Tool : T10531/6 .
-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.
-- Install the Chain Tensioner Lever: T40243 on the cylinder head -lower arrows-.
-- Press the chain tensioner circlip -1- together and hold it.
-- Slowly press and hold the Chain Tensioner Lever: T40243 in the direction of -arrow-.
- This will push back the chain tensioner.
TIP:
The chain tensioner is lubricated with oil and can only be pushed back slowly by applying constant pressure.
-- Lock the chain tensioner with the Locking Tool: T40435 .
-- Remove the Chain Tensioner Lever: T40243 .
-- Install the Camshaft Lock: T40271/3 on the cylinder head.
-- Push the camshaft positioning tool in the splines of the chain sprocket in direction of -arrow B-.
-- If required, turn the intake camshaft with the Assembly Tool: T40427 slightly back and forth in direction of -A arrows-.
-- Install the Camshaft Lock: T40271/4 on the cylinder head.
- The help of a second technician is necessary for the following step.
-- Hold the exhaust camshaft using the Assembly Tool: T40427 . Remove the guide pin -1- and remove the tensioning rail -2- downward.
-- Turn the exhaust camshaft clockwise in direction of -arrow A- again until the Camshaft Lock: T40271/4 can be pushed in the chain sprocket splines in direction of -arrow B-.
-- Remove bolts -arrows- and remove guide rail -1-.
-- Remove the guide pin -1- and the guide rail -2-.
-- Remove the camshaft timing chain from the camshaft sprockets and remove downward.
Risk of destroying the engine by collisions of the valves and the piston crowns.
- If the camshaft timing chain has been removed, then do not turn the crankshaft anymore.
