Valve Timing, Checking
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Spark Plug Removal Tool: 3122B
- Dial Indicator Set: VAS6341
- Dial Gauge Adapter: T10170A
- Wrench - 21mm: T40263
- Adapter: T40314
Procedure
-- Remove the upper timing chain cover. Refer to UPPER TIMING CHAIN COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the cylinder ignition coil "1". Refer to IGNITION COILS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Risk of damaging the engine by the timing mechanism skipping.
- Only let the engine turn in the direction of engine rotation.
-- Vibration damper version 1 Refer to Figure: Turn the vibration damper crankshaft using the Wrench - 21mm: T40263 -item 6-, Adapter: T40314 -item 1- and the 24mm socket -arrow-, until the markings -3 and 4- almost face each other (example illustration).
-- Vibration damper, version 2. Refer to Figure: use an offset open-end wrench - 24 mm to turn the crankshaft at the vibration damper so far -arrow-, until the markings -3 and 4- almost face each other (example illustration).
--
-- Removing the spark plug from cylinder 1 with the Spark Plug Removal Tool: 3122B .
-- Install the Dial Gauge Adapter: T10170A all the way into the spark plug thread.
-- Insert the Dial Gauge Set: VAS6341 with the Dial Gauge Adapter Extending Piece: T10170A/1 all the way and secure it with the locking nut -arrow-.
-- Turn the crankshaft slowly in the direction of the engine rotation -arrow- until the maximum dial reading is reached. When the maximum dial reading is reached (turning point of the meter) position the piston at "TDC" (example illustration).
- The mark -3- from the camshaft chain sprockets -2 and 5- and the mark -4- on the cylinder head cover must align.
TIP:
If the crankshaft was turned past "TDC", turn the crankshaft two more turns in the direction of engine rotation. Do not turn the engine in the opposite direction of the engine rotation.
- If there is an offset of a tooth, the timing chain must be refitted.
-- Install the spark plug. Refer to OVERVIEW - IGNITION SYSTEM .
-- Install the ignition coil. Refer to IGNITION COILS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
