Camshaft Timing Chain, Removing And Installing: Removing
-- Remove the bearing bracket. Refer to BEARING BRACKET, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Risk of damaging the engine by the timing mechanism skipping.
- Only let the engine turn in the direction of engine rotation.
-- Vibration damper, version 1. Refer to Fig 1: turn the crankshaft on the vibration damper using the : T40263 -6-, : T40314 -1- and 24 mm socket -adapter- until the camshafts is at "TDC".
-- Vibration damper, version 2. Refer to Fig 1: use an offset open-end wrench - 24 mm to turn the crankshaft at the vibration damper so far -arrow-, that the camshafts are set to "OT".
- The mark -3- from the camshaft chain sprockets -2 and 5- and the mark -4- on the cylinder head cover must align.
-- Remove the lower timing chain cover. Refer to LOWER TIMING CHAIN COVER, REPLACING .
-- Check the "TDC point" again.
-- Disengage the tension spring wire clip -3- from the oil pan upper section -arrow-.
-- Remove the guide pin -2- and the chain tensioner.
-- Remove the drive chain -1- for the oil pump from the three-layer chain sprocket and let hang at the : T10531/6 .
-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.
-- Install the : T40243 on the cylinder head -lower arrows-.
-- Press the chain tensioner circlip -1- together and hold it.
-- Slowly press and hold the : T40243 in the direction of -arrow-.
- This will push back the chain tensioner.
TIP:
The chain tensioner is lubricated with oil and can only be pushed back slowly by applying constant pressure.
-- Lock the chain tensioner with the : T40435 .
-- Remove the : T40243 .
-- Install the : T40271/2 on the cylinder head.
-- Push the camshaft positioning tool in the splines of the chain sprocket in direction of -arrow B-.
-- If required, turn the intake camshaft with the : T40427 slightly back and forth in direction of -A arrows-.
-- Bolt the : T40271/1 to the cylinder head.
- The help of a second technician is necessary for the following step.
-- Hold the exhaust camshaft using the : T40427 . Remove the guide pin -1- and remove the tensioning rail -2- downward.
-- Turn the exhaust camshaft clockwise -arrow A- again until the : T40271/1 can be pushed in the chain sprocket splines in direction of -arrow B-.
-- Release the retainer -arrow- with a screwdriver and push the guide rail -1- off toward the front.
-- Remove the guide pin -1- and the guide rail -2-.
-- Remove the camshaft timing chain from the camshaft sprockets and remove downward.
Risk of destroying the engine by collisions of the valves and the piston crowns.
- If the camshaft timing chain has been removed, then do not turn the crankshaft anymore.
