Balance Shaft, Removing And Installing, Intake Side: Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:
- Replace bolts that were tightened with an additional turn after removing them.
- Replace the intermediate sprocket after removal.
-- Slide on the pipe at the same time pay attention to the installation position. Refer to Figure.
-- Push together the needle cage from the new needle bearing until it engages.
-- Check if all rollers are correctly installed in the bearing cage.
-- Grease the bearing and bearing track -arrows- from the intake side balance shaft with engine oil.
-- Turn the balance shaft in the installation position.
- The semi-round ring bearing contact surface must point upward.
-- Insert the intake side balance shaft and tighten the bolt -2-.
-- Coat the new O-ring -1- with engine oil.
-- Coat the mounting pin with engine oil and insert.
- The alignment pin -arrow- for the bearing pins must engage in the hole in the cylinder block.
Risk of destroying the engine due to a missing backlash.
- Replace the intermediate sprocket.
The new intermediate sprocket has an anti-friction coating that wears off after a short period of use, which automatically adjusts the backlash.
-- Mark the tooth flank on the intermediate sprocket with a color -arrow-.
Courtesy of AUDI OF AMERICA, LLC-- Install the intermediate sprocket; the marking on the balance shaft must be between the markings on the tooth flanks.
-- Tighten the bolt -1- for the intermediate sprocket, in this gear position. Refer to Fig 4 for the tightening sequence.
-- Check the markings on the intermediate sprocket/balance shaft -arrow-.
-- Install the balance shaft drive chain. Refer to BALANCE SHAFT DRIVE CHAIN, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Replace the balance shaft intake side seal. Refer to BALANCE SHAFT GASKET, REPLACING, INTAKE SIDE .
-- Install the coolant pump toothed belt. Refer to COOLANT PUMP TOOTHED BELT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Install the radiator. Refer to RADIATOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
