Customer states:
- The customer complains about buzzing, booming, humming, whistling, or a similar noise from the front end of the vehicle.
- The noises may be heard from the area around the steering wheel or behind the dash panel.
- It is possible that the noises are assumed to be tire rolling noises.
Workshop findings:
- The noises can be reproduced in a test drive.
TECHNICAL BACKGROUND 1
Mechanical damage may have occurred on the wheel bearing of the front axle, leading to the noise issues described above.
PRODUCTION SOLUTION
Not applicable.
SERVICE
The noises from the wheel bearing can be transmitted via the steering into the vehicle interior.
Because of the proximity, it can be difficult to distinguish wheel bearing noises from rolling noises.
Therefore, with such noises, check whether the wheel bearings of the front axle may be the source and replace the affected component. The following steps are helpful:
- Does the frequency issue rise as the speed increases or does the sound get higher?
- Does the noise get louder when steering?
- Does the noise continue when rolling to a stop in N?
- Is the noise amplified on the steering wheel/airbag well?
- Can vibrations be felt on the coil spring when the wheel is turning with the vehicle suspension extended?
- Does the noise also move to the other side when the wheel bearings are swapped around?
Tip: Please precisely locate the source of the noise with acoustic testers (PICO tool, Chassis ear, VAG 1842) It is possible that a noise perceived on the left side of vehicle is caused by the right wheel bearing.
As a first step for locating the noise more precisely, you should perform measurements at various points (different sides of the vehicle, inner/outer section) at the same time and move towards the source of the noise based on your perception.
The front wheel bearings should not be replaced in pairs.
If the cause of the noise cannot be traced to a wheel bearing, continue the analysis on other components.
