TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

Various factors can lead to functional issues with the parking aid system.

PRODUCTION SOLUTION

Not applicable.

SERVICE

Various environmental conditions can cause false activations to be seen by the customer. In cases where the customer is reporting several false activations (parking aid warning is displayed however nothing is around) the below environmental  and vehicle  contributors should be checked.

The following test procedure must be performed to determine the cause of the issue:

Before performing any repairs, ask the customer about the following points (checklist attached):

Environmental Conditions

  1. Plants growing to certain heights, and curbs can lead to incorrect warnings being issued in the vicinity of the vehicle.
  2. Gravel Tracks, cobblestones, potholes, cattle grids, sharp bends in the road, and slopes can lead to incorrect warnings being issued.
  3. Various types of weather/ambient conditions can lead to functional issues:
    • Water on the parking aid senders (widening of the radiation pattern).
    • Ice/snow on the parking aid senders or in transition to the bumper.
    • Vehicle exhaust gases and water vapor (bursts of heat caused by revving the engine) alter the physical property of the air needed to transport the ultrasound of the parking aid system.
    • Noise disturbance (pneumatic brakes of heavy goods vehicles, anti-rodent devices, or other active ultrasound sources in the vicinity, such as parking aid systems in other vehicles).
  4. Immediate surroundings
    • Fluorescent tubes.
    • Induction loops at traffic lights and car park barriers.
    • Ramps/Driveways.

    Vehicle

  5. Check installation of the license plate and carrier with regard to the following points:
    • Protruding plate carrier.
    • If possible, do not use any advertising carriers.
    • The size of the license plate must be identical to that of the base carrier.
    • License plate fit torig.
    • Ensure that the number plate and carrier are secured correctly at the side edges (edges bent upwards).
  6. Add-on parts/modifications/retrofits which are not Audi Genuine Accessories could lead to an erroneous warning being issued.
    • Trailer hitch.
    • Lowered ride height.
    • Spoilers.
    • Bumpers.
    • Sound generators.
    • Anti-rodent devices.
  7. Previous damage where a new coat of paint has been applied (refer to repair history).

Checks without removal work  /without diagnostic tester

  1. External check of parking aid sensors for:
    • Dirt, ice, foreign objects, stuck-on foil/film.
    • Damage on the bumper, air intake grille and underbody which may have been caused by parking accidents.
    • Mechanical damage (stone chipping, scratches).

Assessed as not OK: Clean/replace sensor

    G16799726

Stone chipping and scratches are not faults which are covered under warranty. Dirty sensors must be cleaned.

  2. Check that parking aid senders are seated securely and engaged correctly by applying pressure.

Assessed as not OK: Repair in accordance with Workshop Manual (Removing and installing parking aid sender)

    G16799727
  3. Check that decoupling ring is seated correctly.
    G16799728
    G16799729
    G16799730

Assessed as not OK: Repair in accordance with Workshop Manual (Removing and installing parking aid sender)

  4. Check that parking aid sender is seated centrally.
    G16799731
    G16799732

Assessed as not OK: Repair in accordance with Workshop Manual (Removing and installing parking aid sender)

  5. Check whether the decoupling ring encloses the sensor evenly.

Assessed as not OK: Repair in accordance with Workshop Manual (Removing and installing parking aid sender)

  6. Check that sensor is fitted so that it is flush with bumper.

Assessed as not OK: Repair in accordance with Workshop Manual (Removing and installing parking aid sender)

Checks without removal work  /with diagnostic tester

  1. Check the vehicle fault memory and proceed according to GFF.

Assessment: If a DTC is stored for one or more parking aid senders, the affected parking aid sender must be swapped for another one. If the event memory entry is no longer logged, it is not necessary to replace the sender.

  2. If the customer complains that a warning is issued although there is no obstacle:
    • Observe oscillation time in measured value blocks (target: 0.8-1.5 milliseconds); decoupling by covering sensor with a foam element which absorbs the ultrasound.
    • Observe distance evaluation in measured value blocks (which sensor possibly issues a warning for no good reason; check/confirm the distance shown).
    • Procedure to be followed if discrepancies are detected: Decouple parking aid sender by covering it with a foam element which absorbs the ultrasound.

Assessment: If decoupling the sensor results in the obstacle warning no longer being issued, please check the surrounding area for reflective objects and remove these. Replacement is not necessary at this point.

If an obstacle warning is still issued although the parking aid sender is covered with a foam element and no damage or dirt is visible, this parking aid sender must be replaced.

  3. Check coding in parking aid control unit as specified in Workshop Manual (e.g. if a towing bracket has been retrofitted).
  4. Check part number read out with tester according to parts catalogue.

Checks with removal work  /with diagnostic tester

  1. Check connections at sensors, at coupling point on bumper, at parking aid control unit and at parking aid sound generator with regard to the following points:
    • Corrosion.
    • Water entering/traces of water.
    • Bent pins.
    • Pushed-back pins.
    • Connector seal must be seated correctly.
    • Seal for pins must be seated correctly.

Assessed as not OK: Repair in accordance with Workshop Manual

  2. Check wires in bumper harness for:
    • Damage/crushing.
    • Sufficient length.
    G16799735
    G16799736

Assessed as not OK: Optimize routing by moving clips so that wires are no longer under tension.

  3. Check connectors at parking aid sender and at coupling point.
    G16799737
    G16799738
  4. Check bracket for sensor in bumper for:
    • Damage/deformation.
    • Secure attachment.
    • Correct alignment.
    • Dirt.
  5. Check sensors for:
    • Damage/deformation.
    • Secure attachment.
    • Correct alignment.
    • Dirt.
    • Correct part number according to parts catalogue.

    Painting the parking aid sensors

When painting the replacement sensors, it is essential  to observe the special painting instructions for parking aid senders in the Paintwork manual.

To do so, go to "Internet" in ElsaWin and then to "Workshop Manual - Paintwork"; in the text search, enter the term "parking aid".

The painting area ranges from a minimum of 2-3mm to a maximum of 8mm from the outside surface to the rear. The housing itself must not  be painted.
