CONDITION

Brakes rubbing - vehicle vibrates when braking.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND 1

The rubbing/vibrating of the brakes can be caused by various issues. These depend on the driving style and the resulting brake disc temperatures, as well as the ambient conditions.

The following criteria can lead to the rubbing:

  1. Corrosion of the brake disc.
  2. Corrosion marks through sticking (corroded) brake pads on the brake disc.
  3. Deposits on the brake disc due to thermal load.
  4. Droning noises because of reduced damping characteristics if brake pads are too heavily worn.
  5. Very high thermal load on the brakes, indicated by blue tempering of the brake discs and possibly heat marks.
  6. Thickness variations of the brake discs after a certain mileage, which cannot be detected using normal workshop measuring methods.
  7. Imbalance or radial run-out of the wheels can significantly increase the rubbing or cause body vibrations which only occur when braking.
  8. Changes to the running gear, such as wider track.
