CONDITION
If there is a reporting obligation or a TSB for the customer complaint, this should be used as a priority.
- This article contains the work steps and basic information which are necessary to provide the best possible technical support for queries about gearbox complaints.
- A technical repair query can only be processed if all information is available.
- This article only provides information for submitting technical repair queries; it must not be used as workshop findings for the complaint and cannot be used for billing purposes.
TECHNICAL BACKGROUND 1
The following description is a guideline for technical enquiries about gearbox complaints.
- Are there event memory entries in the gearbox or in other relevant control units (engine, ESC, data bus diagnostic interface, etc.)?
- If so, work though Guided Fault Finding (if there is no reporting obligation for the issue).
- Send current diagnostic log online and make all gearbox measured values available online
- Check oil level and oil quality.
- If swarf is visible, take photos with scale and attach them to the Doc-IT.
- Locate leaks precisely (clean > leak detection spray > test drive). Take relevant photos and upload them to Doc-IT.
- If glycol may be in the automatic transmission fluid, a glycol test can be carried out with the following gearboxes:
| Manufacturer designation: | Workshop designation: |
|---|---|
| VL300/VL381: | 01J/0AW |
| AL420/AL600 | 09L/0AT/09E |
| AL651/AL551/AL552/AL952 | 0B6/0BK/0D5/0D6 |
| DL501 | 0B5 |
| DL382 | 0CK/0CL/0CJ |
| DQ381 | 0GC |
Use a commercially available glycol test such as:
Glycol test from Hanna Instruments - article number HI 3859.
This glycol test can be ordered via this company's website.
Internal tests have shown that glycol test with expired sell-by date lead to incorrect measurements. In most such cases, the tests indicate the presence of glycol even though there is no glycol in the ATF.
Instead of the instructions in the test kit, the instructions attached to this TSB must be used. If the attached instructions are not used, this may lead to incorrect measurements and misinterpretation of the test result.
- The complaint and driving situation must be described in detail (load/accelerator pedal, rpm, speed, gear (D/S/TIP/R), temperature-related: cold/warm, peripheral conditions: incline, cornering,..., frequency: always/sporadic, etc.)
- Locate noises as precisely as possible (if necessary, with different analysis tools e.g. noise case or PICO-NVH tool) and describe the affected driving situation in detail. Make a noise recording stating the recording location and attach it to the DISS.
- For example: whistling noise at speeds between 60 and 80 km/h (37 and 50 mph) in 3rd and 4th gear under light load. The noise was recorded on the end cover of the gearbox, where it is most audible.
- For a precise noise analysis, the PICO-NVH tool is available. For noise analyses the PICO-NVH tool is recommended.
- Gearshift complaints: Which gears are affected? What is the precise driving situation? At which gear oil temperature does the complaint occur?
- Manual gearbox: scraping noise when changing 3-->4, but only in cold condition.
- Automatic gearbox: example: One-off jerk during the automatic down shift 4-->3 in gear D when accelerating with kickdown at 70km/h (44 mph).
