Adjustment Overview
- When performing assembly work on the transmission a new adjustment of the pinion ring gear (differential) is only required if components were replaced which directly influence the final drive adjustment.
- No adjustment is needed when replacing drive pinion double angular contact ball bearing.
- Note the following table to avoid unnecessary adjustments:
| To be adjusted: | Pinion | Ring gear | Torsional backlash | ||
| ("S 3 " + "S 4 ") | ("S 1 " + "S 2 ") | 0.15 ± 0.4 mm | |||

Sequence for readjusting final drive set
If the pinion and ring gear (differential) must be adjusted, maintain the following sequence, in the interests of a rational sequence:
- Total shim thickness "S total " Determine (S1 plus S2 ) for specified preload of tapered roller bearing/differential.
- Determine the shim "S3 " so that the dimension from center of ring gear to facing drive of drive pinion corresponds to the installation dimension determined during production.
- Shim "S 4 " for positioning the double angular contact ball bearing/pinion in the transmission housing.
- Total shim thickness "S total " Distribute (S1 plus S2 ) so that the specified torsional backlash is present between the ring gear and the drive pinion.
