Customer states:
The customer complains about rattling/clacking/clicking/hissing noises from the front of the vehicle.
The noises occur when pulling away or cornering.
Workshop findings:
Case 1:
It is determined that the component causing the condition is a boot of the wheel input shaft/drive shaft which has been damaged by external influences.
Case 2:
No visible faults are detected but it is certain that the wheel input shaft/drive shaft is causing the noise.
TECHNICAL BACKGROUND 1
Please refer to TSB 2023187: 40 Squeaking noises when steering or maneuvering.
On vehicles with longitudinal gearbox, there is a certain amount of play (vertical/horizontal) on the right gearbox flange (refer to red circle in Figure 1); this is design-related and does not constitute a technical issue.
Regarding Case 1:
External influences include the following: stones, branches or damage caused by animals.
If boots are damaged by these influences, water gets into the area of the boot/constant velocity joint and damages the constant velocity joint of the wheel input shaft.
Regarding Case 2:
Before you replace the wheel input shaft/drive shaft/gearbox, localize the complaint e.g. by performing a road test. Does the noise/vibration increase or change when turning the steering wheel in different speed ranges?
If the noise continues in the different speed ranges, check whether swapping components from a similar vehicle (not from left to right ) resolves the issue.
Or:
You can use noise detection equipment (e.g.: PICO tool VAS 611015/Combiscope) to ascertain which component is causing the noise and then include the measurements with the warranty claim.
