Workshop findings:

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

Because of tolerances, combined with temperature fluctuation the noises can be caused by the interaction between the steering wheel electronics (steering column combination switch and coil connector with electronics including steering angle sender) and the steering wheel.

PRODUCTION SOLUTION

Continuous improvements to the mounting of the steering column combination switch to the steering column.

SERVICE

Determining the root cause of a customer concern:

  1. Remove the steering column trim and recheck the noise.
    1. If this does not resolve the complaint, continue with point 2.
    2. If this resolves the complaint, check the installation position of the steering column trim, and adjust/insulate the trim as needed.
  2. Remove the entire steering wheel electronics module and re-fit the steering wheel to the steering column and reassess the noise.
    1. If this does not resolve the complaint, continue with point 3.
    2. If the noise goes away, refit the steering wheel electronics, and confirm the root cause is the component. If so, replace the steering wheel electronics only if it can't be adjusted to resolve the noise.
    3. Ensure the airbag, airbag harness or the steering wheel button harness are routed/positioned correctly and not applying unneeded tension to slip ring.
  3. Use a Stethoscope or similar and further isolate the root cause of the noise.

Only claim this TSB if the noise concern is resolved by adjusting or insulating the components described. For all other root causes this TSB does not apply and claims should be billed as normal.

On vehicles with dynamic steering (PR number 1N8), the dynamic steering is not active when DTCs are present in the system. In these cases, dynamic steering is disabled, therefore if the noise also goes away, look for the root cause in the dynamic steering system.

If the noise can only be duplicated with vehicle weight (car on the ground) it is likely that the noise is not related to the trim or steering wheel electronics.
