CONDITION

Customer states:

Although the driver has their hands on the steering wheel, the instrument cluster displays a prompt to take over the steering wheel.

WORKSHOP FINDINGS

The DTCs do not indicate a fault in the steering wheel touch recognition (hands off detection). The complaint can be reproduced during a test drive.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND 1

Only vehicles with PR numbers 6I2 and 6I6 have steering wheels fitted with a hands-off detection mat which detects when hands are placed on the steering wheel. Depending on the equipment level, the steering wheel has between one and three sensor zones.

One zone: generally, detects hands on the wheel, but not where nor how many hands are on the wheel.

Two zones: can detect hands on the wheel on the left and right.

Three zones: can detect hands on the wheel on the left and right and if the driver is holding onto the steering wheel.

Vehicles without the hands-off detection mat use a steering torque sensor to detect hands on the wheel.

PRODUCTION SOLUTION

Not applicable.

SERVICE

Adapt the ODIS diagnosis accordingly when searching for the fault.

WARRANT

Apart from vehicles with PR numbers 6I2 or 6I6, replacing the steering wheel does not help here as they do not have such sensors. The replaced steering wheel can be charged back to you.
