Replacing the radial shaft sealing ring for the drive flange on the left and right

WARNING: Car may slip off the vehicle hoist where components are supported.
Danger! Immobilization period-threatening injuries!

Secure the vehicle hoist against lowering and lifting.

Preliminary work

Remove the left and right camber control arm COVER .
Remove EXHAUST SYSTEM
Remove the rear HEAT SHIELD .
Release the rear axle differential PROP SHAFT .
Release the rear axle differential right and left OUTPUT SHAFTS .
Remove rear AXLE DIFFERENTIAL .

NOTE: RISK OF DAMAGE
Damage to rear axle differential.
Failure to comply with the oil specifications can result in serious damage to the rear axle differential.

After completion of repair work, check the transmission oil level in the rear axle differential.
Use only the APPROVED FINAL DRIVE transmission differential fluid..

NOTE: Perform the steps on the right and left side.

→ Remove the radial shaft seal

NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Radial shaft seal ring are equipped with an installation protection ring. The installation protection ring is used to protect the sealing lip when installing the output shaft.

NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Different variants may be installed depending on the vehicle equipment.

Version A:
Pull out and remove the radial shaft seal with the special tools 0 490 466 (00 5 010) and 0 490 873 (11 2 350) .

Prepare the special tool 0 490 466 (00 5 010) with the special tools 0 494 649 (21 2 230) (without the screw) and 0 493 384 (11 1 212) .

Pull out and remove the radial shaft seal with special tools, 0 490 466 (00 5 010), 0 494 649 (21 2 230) and 0 493 384 (11 1 212) .

→ Installing the installation protection ring of the radial shaft seal

NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Radial shaft seal ring are equipped with an installation protection ring. The installation protection ring is used to protect the sealing lip when installing the output shaft.
Install the radial shaft seal (2) using the installation protection ring (1).

→ Install the radial shaft seal
Coat the housing of the sheet metal flange of the radial shaft seal with APPROVED FINAL DRIVE transmission differential fluid..
Strike in the radial shaft seal with the matching special tool 0 495 860 (33 5 130) or 0 495 862 (33 5 140) up to the stop.
Remove the special tool 0 495 860 (33 5 130) or 0 495 862 (33 5 140) .

Follow-up work

For reusing: check the output shaft on the left and right and replacing the SNAP RINGS .
Install rear AXLE DIFFERENTIAL .
Fasten the rear axle differential right and left OUTPUT SHAFTS .
Check/top up the rear axle differential OIL LEVEL .
Secure the rear axle differential PROPELLER SHAFT .
Install the rear HEAT SHIELD .
Install EXHAUST SYSTEM
Install the left and right camber control arm COVER .
