Removing both timing chains and installing or replacing them
Prerequisite
- Remove and install front axle complete with engine and transmission.
Remove and install the engine on the front axle

- When working on the fuel system, make sure the workstation has sufficient ventilation, e.g., by means of extraction.
- Tightly seal off open lines and connections; collect any leakage fuel directly at the point of exit.

- Remove the slide rail (1).
Remove the tensioning rail of the timing chain for cylinder 1-4
- Remove the tensioning rail (1) with the timing chain (2) from the crankshaft gearing.
Removing the slide rail of the timing chain for cylinders 5 to 8
- Remove the slide rail (1).
Remove the tensioning rail of the timing chain for cylinder 5-8
- Remove the tensioning rail (1) with the timing chain (2) from the crankshaft gearing.
Remove the gear from the crankshaft
- Replace the bearing screws (1).

TIGHTENING TORQUES SPECIFICATION

- Clean the thread in the engine block with a screw tap.
- Replace the sprocket wheel (3).
Parts: Camshaft sprocket
- Detach the gear (1) using the special tools 0 490 798 (11 2 000) and 0 490 798 (11 2 000).
- Make sure that there are no metal chips or similar impurities in the area of the chain drive, clean if necessary.
Install the gear on the crankshaft

- Check Woodruff key (1) for damage, replace if necessary.
- Heat camshaft sprocket to a minimum of 60°C and a maximum of 150°C and mount on the crankshaft.
Install the tensioning rail of the timing chain for cylinder 5-8
- Position the tensioning rail (1) with the timing chain
(2) on the gearing of the crankshaft.
Install the guide rail of the timing chain for cylinders 5 to 8
- Attach and position the slide rail (1).
Install the tensioning rail of the timing chain for cylinder 1-4
- Position the tensioning rail (1) with timing chain on the gearing of the crankshaft.
- Attach and position the slide rail (1).
